I mean, I respect their right to have a lack of belief in anything they want, but somehow they manage to make even their most magnanimous attempts to “accept” religion come off patronising as fuck. 

Really? Have you taken a look at the religious? There is not even an attempt at “accepting” a lack of religion at all. Not only do they not respect a lack of belief in their myths but they smugly feel justified in stating that hell is a proper reward for unbeliever. That eternal punishment and torture in hell is what atheist have coming to them.

There is no more passive-aggressive/condescending statement than to say “I’ll pray for you”. That being the case my response will always be “I’ll continue to think for the both of us”. Is that patronising? Who cares. Facts are what they are. Like it or not.

Honestly, I try really hard not to talk about religion (or my lack of) with other people because atheists always get accused of being condescending even the minute they speak up. 

The truth is though, there is nothing more condescending or judgmental than assuming someone who doesn’t share your beliefs is condemned to eternal damnation. Even if you say nothing about your religion to me. Even if I have no idea you believe in anything. The fact that you condemn me to hell in your mind means you are the judgmental, preachy, condescending one, every time. You don’t have to say anything to make this true.
